CO2 Conditioning Unit

FB Group completed the first-ever CO2 Conditioning Unit in the Netherlands, marking a significant milestone in the EU’s journey towards a sustainable future.

As part of the Porthos project in the Rotterdam area, this unit will play a crucial role in Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) by removing Sulphur (H2S) and water from CO2 gas captured from industries. The conditioned CO2 will then be safely stored in empty gas fields beneath the North Sea.

Why CO2 conditioning is essential for CCS

Before captured CO2 can be transported and safely injected underground, it first has to be brought into a condition that protects both the pipeline network and the storage reservoir. Raw industrial CO2 streams typically still contain trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide and water. Left untreated, these components can cause corrosion in pipelines and compression equipment and can affect the long term integrity of the storage site. The CO2 Conditioning Unit removes these impurities so the gas meets the strict specifications required for large scale CCS transport and storage.

Porthos is one of the flagship carbon capture and storage initiatives in the Rotterdam area, designed to capture CO2 from industrial emitters and transport it offshore for permanent storage. By supplying the CO2 Conditioning Unit for this project, FB Group contributes a key process step between capture and transport, ensuring that the CO2 leaving the facility is clean, dry and ready for the pipeline network that carries it to the North Sea.

From industrial emission to permanent underground storage

Once conditioned, the CO2 is compressed and transported through dedicated pipelines to depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea, where it is injected and permanently stored instead of being released into the atmosphere. This closes the loop between industrial CO2 emissions and long term climate solutions, turning a waste stream into a safely managed part of the energy transition. Completing the first unit of its kind in the Netherlands demonstrates how proven gas treatment technology can be applied to support large scale carbon capture at national level.
